The writing for AC04's radio chatter is considered some of the best in the series as far as being interesting and immersive, but the most notorious issue with that in AC04 is that there's a huge discrepancy between the common lines and rare lines. In-game dialogue in Ace Combat tends to be pretty hammy, over-the-top, and "anime." One of my favorite things about AC04 specifically is that the story is not developed in-game, it's strictly in cutscenes where it can take a more serious attitude. AC04 does have its fair share of those, but later games usually had a little more of each. The point in almost any Ace Combat mission is to kill everything, the only exceptions will be boss fights, superweapons, and maybe some unique enemies like jammer aircraft. Later games would base mission ranking on things like time, but this was not consistent from mission to mission, and what the rank was based on is not listed anywhere in-game. My favorite part about this is that it makes earning higher ranks on each mission more clear than later games. This was a continuation of the older games' style, which typically followed this sort of arcade-style scoring or just required that players kill everything on the map. The developers definitely learned their lesson though, later games that had dark levels had better lighting to where you couldn't be crashing into mountains you never saw. Operation Bunker Shot and Emancipation, I know.īunker Shot is cool because you can fly above the clouds and it's all bright and sunny, but Emancipation takes place at like 2 AM so it's just dark as shit.

Do these games improve upon Ace Combat 4? How so? What should I expect? Next I will play Ace Combat 5 and the 3DS game Ace Combat : Assault Horizon Legacy. I realize Ace Combat is more arcadey, so is the Crimson Skies comparison unfair? Crimson skies also developed a stronger narrative. Example, in Crimson Skies there are many different objectives such as flying through obstacles, taking down massive zeppelins, racing other planes. I really wish there was more mission diversity in Ace Combat 04. Now this may not be a fair comparison, but since Crimson Skies was released in 2000 and Ace Combat 4 in 2001 I figured I would touch on this subject. Without reading a wiki or faq I never would have known secret Ace Pilots even existed in levels. I felt like almost every mission was like thisĪce pilots.
